Try our best practices for organizing jewelry and keeping it sorted, untangled, and ready for wear!
To organize your jewelry, it's best to sort by type: necklaces, rings, bracelets, and earrings. Sorting by niche type is just as important, meaning putting small earrings in one pile and large hoops in another. Chunky bracelets should be separated from delicate wrist wear.
As you're sorting, toss out any mismatches or broken pieces (like that earring you've been trying to fix for the past three months? Toss it) Reconsider keeping anything that's out of style or that you haven’t worn in years.
Now onto the best part! Start looking for a jewelry storage box, jewelry box, or jewelry organizer that will suit your needs. Your goal is to arrange each piece of jewelry so it has a place to go at the end of the day. Each pair of earrings should be in its own space or hung on hooks. Necklaces should lay flat and straight or be hung by hooks as well. Chunky bracelets can lay flat and loose bracelets can be flat or hung. Rings should go in ring dividers or on a ring pole. Large earrings that won’t fit into a compartment can be laid flat in the necklace drawer or the posts can be poked into the ring dividers to keep them snug and secure.
Once you’ve gone through the process of organizing your jewelry, it’s easy to keep your collection in top condition! Put your jewelry away as soon as you take it off, and always place it back in its proper compartment. Making this a habit will save you a lot of time in the morning when you’re scrambling to find the necklace that goes perfectly with your outfit.
Another important step is a yearly review of your jewelry collection. Spread out your collection once a year and toss out any broken pieces. You should also get rid of jewelry you haven’t worn recently or simply don’t like anymore. Taking an inventory reminds you of what you have so you can vary your day-to-day choices. Maybe you’ll spot a pair of earrings you love, but forgot you own! By editing it every year, you’ll also keep your collection from outgrowing your jewelry organizer.
If you love your precious jewels, you owe it to yourself and your collection to store it properly. Think of how much easier it will be to find new jewelry when you already know what you have.
